As many of you know, working to improve the lives of companion animals has been a passion of mine for over 20 years. My wife, Pam and I with the assistance of many other caring people have rescued, fostered, spayed, neutered and found loving homes for thousands of dogs and cats over the years. In addition to this labor of love which continues to be a part of our daily lives we have also worked across the border in Mexico for the past 6 years.
Why Mexico? While traveling through Mexico it was impossible not to notice the animals struggling to survive along the roadsides. Overwhelmed by the problem, we sought out others who knew more about this sadness than we did. We learned about the lack of resources – many communities don’t even have vet care available. We learned the terrible truth about how government’s disposed of the excess populations they could catch by mass electrocution. We learned that most of the suffering stemmed from a lack of education and resources.
What could we do? We could help. We began by seeking out the very small groups of individuals already working in Mexico; we worked with veterinarians and volunteers from San Diego to make spay/neuter trips across the border. We raised money and sought out medical donations for much needed supplies. We reached out to the Antirabico (pounds) and worked to introduced humane euthanasia methods. We watched more and more communities step up to the plate and bring Spay/Neuter education and resources to their cities. In isolated areas of Mexico exist wonderful organizations and networks of individuals working toward the same goal – reduce the suffering by reducing the over-population of companion animals. Spay/Neuter!
With the introduction of SpayMexico we will use the opportunities the internet brings – we have a plan to provide a format for people to exchange what’s working in their region. Our goal is to join the entire country with the internet in such a dynamic way that people begin to use each other to learn “what’s working”. This has become our passion and we are taking on the entire country to link like minded people from all across Mexico to cohesively begin to work together.
Please continue to support our efforts and stay tuned for more information on our current projects and goals. Our site is evolving and we are reaching out to existing groups to share ideas and accomplishments. We will do the work – would appreciate your support.
